LSU has tremendous capabilities in the area of remote sensing,
mapping, and geographic information systems (ie, geographic information
science or GISc). In 1989, a university-wide remote sensing and GIS council
(RSGIS) composed of faculty members and researchers from various units
was established. The council reports to the Vice-Chancellor for Research
and Graduate Studies, with primary responsibilities in facilitating interdisciplinary
research and coordination among the various units. Since then, geographic
information science activities have been increasing rapidly, expanding
to various units and centers across the campus.
This web site, which serves as LSU's UCGIS member portfolio,
provides a brief description of the accomplishments of the major units
and departments that have been actively involved in research and eduction
in GIS for at least several years.
